Lovers of the performing arts will find plenty of things to keep them busy in Munich. All year round, numerous state and city theatres and concert halls feature a diverse schedule of events.

Bavarian State Opera

Staging some 350 performances per year, the Bavarian State Opera attracts not only sizeable crowds but also top performers of world-wide renown. Its far-reaching repertoire includes masterpieces by a range of composers, from Mozart to Wagner and from Handel to Monteverdi.

Prinzregententheater

Originally extended as a festival venue exclusively reserved for Wagnerian operas and reopened in 1996, the Prince Regent’s Theatre (Prinzregententheater) has opened its stage to musical theatre, concerts, and readings. Many visiting artists from all around the world have performed on its impressive musical theatre stage.

Staatstheater at Gärtnerplatz

Gärtnerplatztheater’s programme presents not only operas and operettas but also musicals, ballet and contemporary dance. Wrapped in the relaxed and casual ambience of the Glockenbach district, it is in close proximity of variety a of bars and restaurants that lend themselves to enjoyable post-theatre drinking or dining.

Other theatres

Founded in 1897, the German Theatre (Deutsches Theater) exclusively presents shows and musicals that feature sterling casts. It is heaven for any musical theatre fan.
Classical and modern theatre is performed at Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel (Residenztheater) and Münchner Kammerspiele, to name a few; unfortunately, only in German.

Musical Highlights

Three world-renowned orchestras dominate the city’s classical music scene: The Munich Philharmonic (Münchner Philharmoniker), the Bavarian State Orchestra (Bayerisches Staatsorchester), and the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation’s Symphony Orchestra (Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks).
But when it’s time to face the music, there is a variety of jazz musicians, rappers, rock stars, and musicians committed to a variety of pop and live music styles that will catch your ear. They perform at a wide selection of live music venues. Whether it is a small basement bar, a prestigious club, or a large concert hall – year-round, there is a wide range of live music to be heard in the city. As you hop through Munich’s night-life, visit the Night Club at the Bayerischer Hof hotel. In a casual ambiance, you can expect performances by international jazz greats. Muffathalle is more of a pop music mecca: Hot bands whose styles range from hip-hop to independent perform regularly at the venue
