Oktoberfest
Munich’s Octoberfest is the world’s largest fair and will be celebrating its
200th birthday in 2010. Every year, more than 6 million visitors flock to the
fair.
At the “Wiesn” (from the German “Wiese” = meadow because the fair is held in
Theresa’s Meadow), 5 million litres of beer are downed and 500,000 chickens
are consumed every year; mostly in the beer halls operated by Munich’s traditional
breweries.
The fair’s schedule of accompanying events includes the beer hall owners’ and
breweries’ procession to the fair, the folk costume and rifle association pageant,
and a concert performed by all Wiesn bands.
The Wiesn is a feast for all your senses, a happy mix of booths, traditional
merry-go-rounds, high-tech roller-coasters, a Ferris wheel and spectacular loops,
small and large stands selling Bavarian specialities such as candyfloss, gingerbread
hearts and roasted almonds, or balloons, stuffed animals and other souvenirs,
and, last but not least, the Munich breweries’ 14 beer halls on „Wirtsbudenstrasse".
