Shopping
Shopping – Luxury, China, and Purveyors to the Court
Going on a shopping spree is not a bad way to ensure you will be enjoying your
trip to the city. Munich is a shopper’s paradise presenting everything required
to binge at will: from Cartier to Louis Vuitton, from Armani to Boss, all those
great international labels are just waiting for visitors to pull out their wallets.
Right next door, you will find coveted traditional Munich stores such as the
so-called “Purveyors to the Court”. Back in the day when Bavaria was a monarchy,
the kings awarded the title of “Purveyor to the Royal Bavarian Court”. Any business
so entitled would then enjoy the privilege of supplying the royal court with
anything required – from jewellery to stationery.
Bustling Marienplatz is no doubt the starting point and hub of any Munich shopping
spree. Here, you will find not only all things traditionally Munich but also
anything you may need to hike, ski, or bike in Munich’s surroundings (just visit
one of the large sports retailers).
Pure Luxury – Maximiliansstrasse and Munich’s Golden Triangle
Luxury
to the hilt: That’s the motto for Munich’s shopping boulevard Maximiliansstrasse,
and the adjacent Maximilianhöfe. This is where international designers, prestigious
jewellers, and respected gallery owners provide a feudal offering of the choicest
products. If you prefer things just as prestigious but a little more traditional,
Residenzstrasse will be just right for you. In this street, the erstwhile Purveyors
to the Court continue to ply wares that would meet with the approval of the
king, such as custom-tailored folk costumes, hats and shoes, selected tobacco
products, as well as a variety of coffees and teas. In addition, Theatinerhof,
Perusapassage with its top casual wear brands, and Theatinerpassage, which is
on the National Register of Historic Places, beckon shoppers with merchandise
that appeals to the sophisticated, while works of art, silk carpets, and ancient
chandeliers await buyers at Preysing-Palais.
Fünf Höfe / Brienner Strasse
Just
a few yards south towards Marienplatz, the air surrounding Fünf Höfe and Schäfflerblock,
a modern mall and shopper’s paradise, is just as elegant. Whether it’s fashion,
books, gourmet foods or home furnishings, shoppers with refined tastes will
find what they’re looking for. It is one-stop shopping in a setting characterized
by exceptional urban architecture. Schäfflerblock is the best place to look
for the latest trends in fashion and all things outré.
There is a section of Brienner Strasse between Hofgarten and Luitpoldblock that is particularly refined.
