Medical Care Especially for Children

The medical care and treatment of children is not the same as that for adults, but requires specialist medical training. In Munich, medical care is available at the highest level, in conjunction with research in various specialized areas.
Children
of all age groups – from extremely premature babies to young adults – are provided
for in Munich. The doctors in these clinics are equipped to deal with the treatment
of almost all sub-specialities such as cancer, kidney or metabolic disorders
in children. There are also links to the Kinderchirurgie (Clinic for Paediatric
Surgery), the Stoffwechselzentrum (Centre for Metabolic Disorders) in Munich-Schwabing
as well as to the Deutsches Herzzentrum (German Cardiac Centre) and other institutes
of Munich’s universities.
From both a national and international perspective, the key therapy areas in the Munich paediatric clinics are the following:
- Paediatric haematology and oncology (disorders of the blood and blood forming organs, cancers)
- Congenital metabolic disorders and hereditary diseases (of genetic origin)
- Neuropaediatrics (esp. disorders of the central nervous system) particularly epilepsy and neurometabolic disorders
- Endocrinology and diabetology (disorders of hormone metabolism)
- Cardiology with foetal echocardiography (in the unborn child)
- Gastroenterology (gastro-intestinal disorders)
- Allergology and pulmonology (skin and respiratory disorders)
- Chronic renal disorders and pediatric dialysis
- Interdisciplinary intensive medicine (with paediatric surgery) and neonatology (premature birth)
- Growth disorders (e.g., microsomia)
Clinical activities are augmented by numerous scientific projects in diverse research laboratories and in national and international studies. By this means, medical professionals can exchange experience and expertise not just within Germany but world wide.
Research
focuses on cell therapy, in particular stem cell transplantation. It offers
important perspectives for the future in the therapy of oncological disorders
and also other disorders such as metabolic defects.
It is the aim of the clinics and their personnel, with the involvement of the families,
to provide and ensure comprehensive care of their young patients as far as possible from
diagnosis through treatment, not only in the case of common illnesses but also in the
therapy of very rare diseases.
