Visas

In principle, visitors to Germany are subject to a visa requirement (except, e.g., citizens of European Union member countries).

As a rule, you will require a visa for your stay in Germany. You may apply for the visa at German embassies or consulates (see below). Please allow approximately two weeks’ processing time; the time required may be longer during peak travel periods. You must have your visa when entering the country and may not apply for your visa once in Germany. If you are travelling to Germany to undergo medical treatment, you will also require a statement by the entity that will defray any resulting expenses. Detailed information is available at any Health centre or German consulate. Usually, a German visa will also entitle you to travel to Austria (or any country that has ratified the Schengen Treaty).
