Exploring Munich Without a Car

Your best bet is exploring Munich without a car. The city’s tightly woven public transportation network consists of suburban trains (S-Bahn), the underground (U-Bahn), trams (Strassenbahn) and buses. They will allow you to reach any point in the city both comfortably and safely.

We Recommend: Buy a Day Pass
If you want to travel without a care, buy a day pass that is valid all over the city. There is an option for adults, another for children, as well as a partner pass that allows up to 5 adults to travel on the same ticket (2 children aged 14 or younger are considered 1 adult!). The recreation areas in Munich’s vicinity such as Starnberger See or Ammersee can also easily be reached by S-Bahn. Depending on your destination, use an XXL Day Pass or a Network Day Pass.
Buying Tickets
Individual tickets and day passes are available at any underground or suburban train stop as well as on any tram or bus. Any ticket must be machine-stamped before you board the train or bus!
Operating Hours
Most lines have regular service from 5 a.m. to 12 noon, with the underground and suburban trains running an extra hour. Trams feature night lines that operate all night but do not cover the entire city.
