Weather

Munich is located in a temperate zone, where winters aren’t extremely cold and summer aren‘t extremely hot. Nevertheless, there may be extended spells of freezing temperatures from December to February. Likewise, there may be times between June and August when average temperatures soar into the upper eighties and beyond (above 30 degrees Centigrade).

Precipitation is common all year round, frequently occurring as thunderstorms in summer or snow in winter. Thus, be sure to pack your umbrella.

In Munich, the locals love winter sports, and the city offers a wealth of choices, whether you enjoy skating, tobogganing or cross-country skiing. In summer, there are plenty of options to go for a dip, either by visiting the 9 public pools or 7 lakes suitable for swimming within the city limits, or by heading for any of a number of lakes or rivers in Munich’s surroundings.

Munich’s residents would rather spend their time outside. As soon as the sun is out, many cafes and beer gardens will put out tables and chairs – even during the colder months. Below, please find typical temperature ranges for selected months:

January: -10° – 17°Centigrade (14 to 63 degrees Fahrenheit)
May: 6° – 30°Centigrade (43 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit)
