About Us
Open-minded and open-hearted – Munich uses words like these as its slogan when advertising itself to refer to the quality of life in the city. The Department of Arts and Culture presents Munich's' culture and art scene through festivals, special events and regular programmes of events, with the aim of building bridges between the different cultures in our city's society and facilitating intercultural encounters. As part of the work by the Cultural Department on long-term district cultural planning, the cultural activities of the clubs and associations, club rooms, citizens' initiatives, particular facilities and artists in each of the districts are all drawn together and presented to a broad public under the banner of "Wir machen was" – We're doing something.
In addition to district cultural planning, which enjoys Europe-wide recognition, popular culture represents an important cornerstone of Munich's cultural life. The popular cultural scene in all its manifestations is presented using specially-created event forms.
"Ortstermine / Freie Kunst im öffentlichen Raum," or "Local inspection / Free Art in Public Places," Germany's only such project, Munich is promoting a lively public discussion about the interdisciplinary aspect to contemporary art. Public places around the city are made available for art and design experimentation.
Using exhibitions, workshops and speeches, the Department of Arts and Culture contributes to a better understanding of history and science.
Preserving our cultural heritage is one of the pillars of international cultural policy. Varied projects are designed to illustrate cultural diversity.
Munich music, theatre and dance scenes rank at the top end of Europe's cities. Keeping and improving this position is our goal and our duty. This goal is realised in cooperation with municipal institutions and renowned cooperation partners.
