Artothek

The idea of opening up cultural education and art to as many people as possible irrespective of their financial means stems from the 1920s. Since then, art can be taken out just like books from normal public libraries. The Munich Artothek was founded in 1986 and, as a municipal institution, is interested particularly in promoting the local art scene. Munich´s artists can use the rooms for single-artist presentations as well as for group exhibitions. Pictures showcased here are later on often included in the Artothek's collection, which now extends to more than 1500 pictures and sculptures which can all be borrowed by members of the public. A varied exhibition schedule adds to the institute's communicative character. Visual arts and literature are combined in special topic exhibits with readings.
