Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism

A project being planned by the City of Munich, the Free State of Bavaria and the Federal Republic of Germany

The educational approach to the history of National Socialism has become one of the main constituents of the Germany's politico-cultural identity in the last decades since. Now more than at any time since the end of World War Two, remembrance of the Holocaust and the Nazi period is part of Germans' present-day consciousness. It has become especially clear in recent years that the way in which the country's National Socialist past is remembered is in the process of changing. The Germans have realised the need to consider not only the already existing memorial sites, which direct people's attention mainly to the victims of the Nazi regime, to be a part of the remembrance process but also the places where the crimes committed in the name of National Socialism were committed.

The City of Munich will make an important contribution to encourage this approach by establishing the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism at a location near Königsplatz: in 2001, the Munich state capital made a landmark decision, which was supported in 2002 by the Bavarian Parliament, to set up a new memorial site in Munich whereby the City and the Free State of Bavaria hope to call to mind Munich´s history and role in the Nazi era. The preparatory committees of experts took up their work in early 2005. The project will be overseen on the part of the City by the Cultural Department and on the part of the Free State by the Landeszentrale für politische Bildungsarbeit, the Bavarian state institution for the promotion of political education.

The documentation and education centre will not only serve as a topographic anchor for remembrance of the Nazi era, but is also sure to stimulate public debate and bring further, new dimensions into play regarding the discussion of Munich´s position and role as the one-time Hauptstadt der Bewegung, or "Capital of the (National Socialist) Movement". The centre will be contributing significantly to creating stronger historical awareness and to further enhancing the City of Munich's cultural memory, for these educational efforts aimed at continuing to preserve remembrance are vital for our city's and our society's democratic culture. An open and discerning discussion about our negative cultural heritage is intended to serve as a warning to future generations and help to hone a sustained awareness of present-day social and political developments.
