The Rathausgalerie in the former cashier's hall of the neo-Gothic city hall, completed in 1908, made its debut as a municipal exhibition hall with the 1979 exhibition, Münchner Künstler im Rathaus (Munich Artists in the City Hall). It provided a 650-square-meter five-aisle columned hall with a prestigious central aisle. A marble fountain in the centre and an eight-metre-high glass dome enhance the impressive effect of this extraordinary space. In the last few years, the role of the Rathausgalerie as a forum for art, culture and municipal history has been continuously enlarged. Situated right on the Marienplatz, the gallery has established itself as a successful city centre municipal art and exhibition venue.
Reflecting artistic developments in and around Munich, the Rathausgalerie is a venue for contemporary art and has become indispensable particularly to Munich artists as an exhibition forum.
The range of works of contemporary art on show at the Rathausgalerie includes painting, sculpture, video pieces and constructions.
Every September, the Rathausgalerie is transformed into a centre for information and artists' presentations about the Open Art Weekend held by the "Initiative Münchner Galerien zeitgenössischer Kunst", a group of Munich contemporary art galleries.
There are normally no art exhibitions during the months of December to February, when the venue is given over to exhibitions of historical interest or, for example, such as the 2002 "Wohnen in München" exhibition on outstanding urban planning developments. The venue gained nationwide attention in 1997, when its prominent status as a central venue lent greater notoriety to the controversial touring exhibition "Verbrechen der Wehrmacht" on war crimes committed by Germany's army in World War Two.
