Munich is the only western German city which can boast a communal children's and young people's theatre, with its own space and its own company of performers. The theatre, which was originally called the "Münchner Märchenbühne" (the Munich Fairy Tale Theatre), was founded in 1953 on the basis of a private initiative. In January 1969, the theatre was taken over by the city of Munich and joined together with the Otto Falckenberg drama school, whose students formed the cast. In 1976, the Schauburg moved into a new venue in a former cinema at Elisabethplatz in the heart of Munich's Schwabing district. In 1991, the theatre was renovated and rebuilt into one of the most modern and state-of-the-art theatres for children and young people anywhere in Europe. The Schauburg wants to help its young audience to discover an appropriate, natural and relaxed attitude to education, which is why more than half of its performances are put on in the mornings at kindergartens and school classrooms.
