The Munich Folk Theatre

Münchner Volkstheater

(Munich Folk Theatre)

In October 2002, Christian Stückl took over the artistic management of Munich's Volkstheater. Since then, he has opened the venue to a young cast under young directors such as Florian Fiedler, who was awarded the "Best Young Director of 2004" prize by the professional journal "Theater heute" for his production at the Volkstheater of Nieder Bayern.

In Christian Stückl's eyes, it is important to promote traditional Bavarian stories and characteristics. Thus he has already staged the traditional Bavarian plays "Geierwally" and "Der Räuber Kneissl" and is planning to direct another production during the current season with the Riederinger Musikanten, a Bavarian folk band. Moreover, the Münchner Volkstheater continues to develop new approaches to and perspectives on well-known plays, including classical works. In the 2003 / 2004 season, for instance, the theatre put on a new version of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" by the young Hamburg director Jorinde Dröse, who has just excelled with her new interpretation of Marieluise Fleisser's Fegefeuer (Purgatory) in Ingolstadt, while Christian Stückl caused a stir with his production of the original version of Frank Wedekind's Lulu.
