Department of Education and Sports

Education

The city of Munich builds and runs childcare centres, it finances the construction, maintenance and equipping of all non-private schools, runs 120 municipal schools and initiates a wide range of educational projects, which it then also finances or at least partly subsidises.

The Department of Education and Sports offers a wide spectrum of education and care services suitable for a big city -childcare facilities, vocationally- and academically oriented secondary schools, vocational training schools and further education colleges.

Regarding the importance of education, the requirements and expectations of Munich´s children and their parents the City of Munich developed the "Munich approach". This is an overall pedagogical concept which is continually being updated. Some key aspects of the Munich approach are e.g. conceiving kindergartens as places of education, a high standard of schooling and training, the provision of all-day schooling and to provide the same educational opportunities irrespective of the social background.

Read how we put this in to practice in our booklet "Tailor-made education - The Munich approach" pdf

Sports

The sports programme covers a wide range of activities organised by the city in close co-operation with clubs, associations, universities, health insurance companies and private-sector enterprises. Over 6,000 sports activities can be found on the Internet at www.sport-muenchen.de, with a choice of around 300 types of sports, ranging from the conventional to the unusual.
Munich has around 700 sports clubs which are supported by the city. They have approximately 520,000 members, or around 40% of the population, a figure which is well above the national average.

The Sports Section of the Department of Education and Sports puts on a various number of sports programmes, e.g. also for occasional sportsmen and sportswomen who aren’t member of a club or a vacation sports programme for schoolchildren.

The city also owns and maintains district sports facilities, sports fields, sports halls, stadiums, swimming baths, ice rinks and centres for fun sports, providing plenty of opportunities for every Munich citizen who wants to stay fit and healthy.
