Science and education
Broad spectrum of schools
A variegated school system and a plethora of respected training, development and adult education facilities form
the bedrock of Munich's educational system. Elementary schools and three streamed secondary school systems
provide a broad-based general education that gives vital orientation in today's knowledge society. The Bavarian
capital operates more schools – 310 general secondary schools, including 48 grammar schools and 190
vocational schools – than any other local authority in Germany. Three international schools and a wide range of
schools catering to specific native languages have also become established in Munich.
Germany's second university city
Specialized establishments such as universities and polytechnics help the region accumulate a pool of in-depth
expertise. Eleven internationally recognized universities, polytechnics and other institutes of higher education
make Munich Germany's second-largest university city. The challenge today is to attract creative people in
knowledge-based disciplines during their educational trajectory – and then to keep them afterwards. Munich
rises to this challenge by offering a broad array of excellent training and development organizations and a
multifaceted labor market.
World-ranking research establishments
Munich is home to a kaleidoscope of world-ranking non-university establishments. The Fraunhofer Society, for
example, has its headquarters and six further institutes here. The Max Planck Society has its administrative
offices and no fewer than 13 institutes here. The Helmholtz Association (three institutes), the Leibniz
Association (four institutes) and knowledge organizations such as the GSF National Research Center for
Environment and Health and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen round off the picture of
a very mature education and research hub in and around the Bavarian capital.
The European and German Patent Offices help the business community translate its knowledge into products and
services. Bavaria regularly tops the list of patent registrations in both Germany and Europe.
