The EQUAL community initiative

Facts and figures about EQUAL
Throughout Germany, the European Union spends € 2.973 billion out of its European Social Fund on the EQUAL initiative. The initiative has created some 1500 development partnerships (DPs) all over Europe, 109 of them in Germany. Of these, eight are based in Bavaria, one of which is the Munich DP.

The significance of EQUAL for Munich's labor market policy
EQUAL projects are an important element of Munich's labor market policy. Its focus on adaptability identifies the interests and needs of the relevant target groups (the unemployed, those threatened by unemployment, and "hidden manpower reserves"). But it also recognizes the needs of the corporate sector. The aim of providing exactly the right qualifications and thereby improving the individual's chances of finding a job plays a central role. Demographic trends show that the supply of employable persons will decrease over the medium to long term. The EQUAL project therefore adopts an anticyclical approach, providing qualifications prophylactically during economic downturns.

Transnational collaboration
Transnational collaboration with European partners is an essential feature of the EQUAL community initiative. Each partner can thus learn from the experience of the others. In this way, the initiative helps foster new approaches to dealing with labor market problems across national borders. Munich cooperates with Bordeaux, Dublin and Naples.
