The MOVA project: methods and results

Methods and assignments

  • To realize and tap the potential for apprenticeships with non-German employers of all nationalities
  • To build up and organize an ongoing advisory and support service for training issues to further establish these companies' position as training providers
  • To persuade foreign youngsters and their parents of the need for and advantages of sandwich course-style training, and to provide help in finding apprenticeships
Practical experience has showed that establishing direct contact with local companies and having the career advisors place trainees directly (e.g. on the basis of specific language skills) is the most efficient approach.

Results
In a two-year period, starting from a database with 2800 addresses, of which 1300 companies were contacted, 70 companies signed up for the project. They have since signed contracts for 119 apprenticeships. In addition, 35 companies were awarded the right to train apprentices. All in all, 159 new apprenticeships were filled thanks to the activities of the MOVA office.

In 2002, efforts to safeguard existing apprenticeships took on concrete form through individual support in isolated problematic cases, mediation between employers and trainees, and assistance to help employers stabilize and extend their training activities. The results of a current empirical study are due to be published in spring 2004.
