Schloss Lustheim

Together with the Lustheim Palace, the Old and the New Schleißheim Palace constitute one of the major baroque complexes in Germany.

Neues Schloss Schleißheim

The "Blue Elector", Maximilian Emanuel, who first fought with the Austrians against the Turks, then with the French against the Austrians, did not bring Bavaria much luck. However, he did give the city the magnificence of the baroque palaces of Nymphenburg and Schleißheim.

In 1701, the architect Enrico Zuccalli began building the New Castle, which was continued by young Josef Effner in 1719-26.

French elegance is reflected in the facade, and pervades the lavishly decorated interior. Highlights include the Great Hall, the Victorian Hall and the Great Gallery. Since 1978, the palace houses the State Gallery of European Baroque Painting.

Altes Schloss Schleißheim

The "Altes Schloss" (Old Palace) is a rare example of a late Renaissance country residence. After having been considerably damaged during the war, it was partially rebuilt in 1972. Under Maximilian I, extensive farm buildings were added to the original palace in 1616-23. Today, the Old Palace houses exhibits from the Bavarian National Museum, including an East and West Prussia exhibition and Gertrud Weinhold's collection of popular religious art.

Exemplary pleasure palace with novel (for the time) ceiling frescoes.

Maximilian Emanuel's "hunting palace" was built to celebrate his marriage to the Emperor's daughter, Maria Antonia, in June 1685. The palace houses an outstanding collection of Meissen porcelain from the Ernst Schneider Foundation. The collection includes over 2,000 valuable plates, table centerpieces and animal figures, and is surpassed only by the collection in the Dresdner Zwinger Palace.
