The future of tradition – the tradition of the future One hundred years after the exhibition “Masterworks  of Mohammedan Art”
In 1910, an event was held in Munich's "Exhibition Park," today the Theresienhöhe, which was unique and never repeated: An exhibition with almost 3,600 items displayed and paid homage to the visual culture and arts of the Islamic world. Among the hundred-thousand visitors were pioneers of occidental modern art, such as Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, who were deeply impressed by Islamic abstraction.

The Haus der Kunst (House of Art) is using the 100th anniversary of this exhibition to document it historically. In the center of this new display, which will be arranged in a circle, around 30 of the most famous rugs, vases, manuscripts and other exhibits from the 1910 event will be shown. The outer sections are devoted to modern eastern culture of the 20th century and to contemporary art. Artists, curators, institutions are being invited to contribute their reaction to the 1910 exhibition.

Several other museums and institutions in Munich are also planning exhibitions and events series in the fall of 2010 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of this event, among others the Völkerkundemuseum (Ethnological Museum) and the Villa Stuck.

Giacometti, Hodler, Klee... Swiss peaks from seven centuries
The Bern Art Museum is bringing 150 masterpieces to Munich. Paintings, paper work and sculptures by artists born in Switzerland were chosen. The choice covers everything from the altar leaves of the Bern “carnation masters” from the 15th century, all the way to the great works of artists like Böcklin, Hodler, Giacometti, Klee, Tinguely or the contemporary Pipilotti Rist. Thus, the works displayed will not only reflect the collection of Switzerland's oldest museum, but also the country’s artistic evolution.

Gabriel von Max

Gabriel von Max (1840-1915) was a painter, collector, scientist and follower of Darwin's theory of evolution. Towards the end of the 19th century, he devoted himself increasingly to his scientific pursuits and on the series of pictures of monkeys, which brought him a great deal of recognition. The exhibition at the Kunstbau shows all the facets of Gabriel von Max's scientific work, from select paintings all the way to zoological and ethnological items from his collection.

Documentary film in the 21st century
In the fall of 2010, the new building of the School of Television and Film (HFF) will open its doors in the immediate vicinity of the Pinakothek der Moderne. This new proximity of the two institutions will be used as an occasion for an initial collaboration. The Pinakothek and the HFF are planning an exhibition on the subject of documentary film with the working title "100 Films – 100 Worlds." Around 100 films that were produced at the HFF during the past decade will be used to illustrate the development and sheer bandwidth of the genre and how the school achieved the highest reputation and continues to enjoy international attention to this day. The project at the Pinakothek der Moderne will express the growing significance of film as a medium in the visual arts.
