Paying cash versus buying a pass
Here you will find more information on Munich’s fare system.
Cash Fare
For those that pay cash, the area served by MVV has been subdivided into four zones. The fare depends on the number of zones travelled. If you travel through the same zone twice during your ride, you must pay twice for that zone. There is a four-zone limit on the fare. For each number of zones travelled, there is a special Single ticket. If you hold a Stripe ticket, you must cancel two stripes per zone travelled.
Fare Map for the Inner Region
All of Munich and some surrounding communities combined make up one zone (marked white on the fare map), the so-called Inner Region (Innenraum)

Fare Map for the Total Network
The remaining MVV region has been subdivided into three zones (marked green, yellow and red on the fare map). These three zones that run a circle around Munich combine to make up the Outer Region (Aussenraum). The greater the number of zones, the longer the maximum allowed duration for the ride.

Special Fare Calculation for Weekly, Monthly or Annual Passes
Pass fares are based on a more detailed scheme that subdivides each zone into four rings. Overall in the MVV region, there are thus 16 rings on which pass fares are based. Rings 1 through 4 correspond to the Inner, rings 5 through 16 to the Outer Region. Rings 1 through 16 make up the total network. The fare depends on the number of rings travelled (with a minimum of two adjacent rings).
You can use determine the number of rings required for a certain connection and the resulting price of an IsarCard weekly or monthly pass by providing the following information:
Within the rings selected, you can use your pass to travel any line in any direction.
