The Munich City Archives is in possession of records of all municipal authorities ranging from the Middle Ages to the present; it also files private documents relevant to the history of the city. The Archives' photo collection contains around 1.8 million photos documenting Munich's topography and its history of events. The Munich City Chronicle (dating back to 1818) is a unique source of information.

The monthly „Einblicke“ [insights] events range from city-historical lectures to discussions on practical issues of archival work. Exhibitions, readings, lectures, etc. take place in the reconstructed study of Schalom Ben-Chorin, the philosopher of religion (tours are offered Wednesdays from 9 am to 12 pm; closed on public holidays). At irregular intervals, the City Archives hosts exhibitions on the history of Munich.
