Against a backdrop of economic strength, Germany has proactively pursued “green” policy design and implementation, emerging as a leader in the sustainability sector. Munich Riem, a newly developed city district, hosted the conference and offered a glimpse of one outcome of this national initiative.

In addition, the 2014 IRBC conference offered participants the opportunity to attend joint sessions of the concurrent Eurocities 2014 conference. Overlapping with the smart cities theme, Eurocities 2014 highlighted energy efficiency strategies for metro areas.
