Industry on Campus partnership sets milestone

(17.12.19) SAP is investing around 100 million euros in a new research building at the Technical University of Munich in Garching near Munich. In three years time 600 SAP and 130 TUM employees will be conducting research there. According to TUM, this is Germany’s most extensive cooperation between a company and university to date.

It is planned that the employees from SAP SE and TUM will move in from the end of 2022 to advance the new technologies of digitalization. Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, big data, cloud computing and mobility are all key topics.

“With this first “Industry on campus” initiative we are setting the largest milestone to date in the implementation of our TUM AGENDA 2030 as part of the federal government’s and federal states’ Excellence Strategy,” explained TUM President Professor Thomas F. Hofmann during the signing of the cooperation agreement. The Free State of Bavaria, which owns the plot of land, is providing it at no cost for a limited amount of time. Hofmann says that this and other plans for the Garching Campus will make it the leading European hub for data and information technology.

Other new builds in Garching include the Department for Electrical and Computer Engineering, the new TUM Center for Quantum Engineering and the new Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security.
