First Techfest Munich a resounding success
300 tech enthusiasts, 72 hours of ideas and energy
(Sept 13, 2016) UnternehmerTUM, the Center for Innovation and Business Creation at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), hosted the first Techfest Munich in Garching on the weekend of September 9-11, 2016. Participants spent three days and two nights developing hardware, software and prototypes.
In the end, five winning teams marked the culmination of what was a highly successful debut event.
Technology enthusiasts were free to experiment with the latest technologies and materials over the three days of the Techfest. The location itself was nothing short of unique: Overseen by experienced mentors, all experiments and development work took place in the Maker Space, the 1,500-m2 high-tech workshop operated by unternehmerTUM at the Entrepreneurship Center in Garching.
The international line-up of participants and representatives of large companies who attended the Techfest were thrilled by the whole atmosphere, the opportunities – and the results.
To conclude the event, a jury presented prizes to five winning teams for what they had developed “within 72 hours”.
First prize: adidas Safe Light Jacket – a safety jacket for cyclists with built-in LEDs as display lights and with a flashing indicator function
Second prize: Holo Truck – systematic safety checks for truck drivers via a HoloLens connected to the vehicle
Third prize: FlixFace – face recognition for fast check-in to coaches in compliance with data privacy laws
Special City of Munich Prize: Awesome Disc – a Frisbee that shines in all the colors of the rainbow and can write texts in the night sky
Special TUM Prize: Personal Protein Printer – an opportunity to open up new personalized medicine applications
The Techfest Munich was organized by unternehmerTUM, the Center for Innovation and Business Creation at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). It was also sponsored by Munich Startup, the official startup portal for Munich, and by the City of Munich's Department of Labor and Economic Development.
