Oktoberfest: Reserving seats in a beer tent

How to get a free seat in a beer tent

Demand for seating places inside the famous beer tents is very high. It is recommended to reserve in advance before the Oktoberfest starts - and to reserve only at the official Oktoberfest landlords. Either by mail or by using the official online request service for reservations, starting from the beginning of April.

But it is possible to get a free seat even without having a reservation. You just have to come at the right time. When exactly? Our so-called Oktoberfest barometer (in German - green: fewer visitors; red: many visitors) can help. By the way: Table reservations are free of charge, but it is mandatory to purchase meal vouchers for use inside the tents. The entrance to the Oktoberfest is also free, only the passage to the "Oide Wiesn" (Old Oktoberfest) will be charged with 3€, at least for adults (children under 14 are free of charge).

How to reserve a table in a tent

New: Send booking requests to the beer tents online

Starting in April, the beer tents' landlords will accept requests for the upcoming Oktoberfest. Send your request online here (German site)...

Terms of reservation

What do you get when booking seats in the respective tents, and for which price? The service conditions in comparison (PDF, German site).

The reservation itself is free of charge. Usually, each person buys vouchers for a certain amount of beverages and food (in most cases two liters of beer and one chicken). These are valid only for the current Oktoberfest and have to be paid in advance. The vouchers can be redeemed inside the tent.

Ways of reserving: Only the landlords of the beer tents are allowed to accept reservation requests, usually by letter or fax. The letter should contain the desired number of seats and date. The landlords try to comply to special wishes for seats in certain spots, but cannot guarantee for them. Since one table fits up to ten persons, reservations usually come in groups of ten.

The best time for reserving: Most landlords accept reservations for the next Oktoberfest directly after the last festival has ended. Whether the reservation request has gone through will be disclosed around springtime. Those who are late with their reservations may try to contact the landlords until a few weeks before Oktoberfest starts.

The vouchers: According to the beer tent, the vouchers have to be collected some weeks before the Oktoberfest kick-off in the landlord's offices. For a small fee, the vouchers can also be mailed in every part of the world.

In the tent: The vouchers can be redeemed at the table inside the beer tent. Of course, every visitor is free to eat and drink more than the amount that has been paid in advance. Hovewer, the reservation is not for a complete day but only for a certain timeframe which will be communicated with the confirmation of the reservation. This is to allow more groups of people to celebrate inside the beer tent.

Get a seat without a reservation

As with previous Oktoberfests, the 2015 festival will see lots of reservation-free seats in the big beer tents. On weekdays, a quarter of all seats inside the tent are available for spontaneous visitors. On saturdays, sundays and public holidays, the quota of open seats even rises to half of all seats available, at least until 3:00 pm. After that, the quota of non-reserved places is still at 35 percent. This gives visitors a chance to get a seat even without having a reservation. Of course, it's "first come, first serve". A helpful tool when looking for free seats is our so-called Oktoberfest barometer (green: fewer visitors; red: many visitors), which estimates how full the tents are at given times.
