Sendlinger Strasse: The most important information at a glance

Varied, colorful and also a little bit shrill - this is the best way to describe the shopping flair in Sendlinger Strasse:

  • Shopping: In addition to numerous smaller stores, the Hofstatt shopping center is also located in Sendlinger Strasse.
  • Eating and drinking: Various restaurants, such as the traditional Alte Hackerhaus and a number of cafes can be found along the street.
  • Sightseeing: The Asamkirche Church, one of the most magnificent in Munich, as well as the late baroque Ruffinihaus are worth a glance.
  • Pedestrian Zone:  Over the course of several years, the entire Sendlinger Strasse was converted into a pedestrian zone until 2019.

A very special shopping flair

Between Rindermarkt and Hackenstrasse, the renovated and car-free Sendlinger Strasse shines in new splendor:

  • Here, passers-by stroll over artificial stone slabs and anthracite-colored natural stone.
  • Former publishing buildings were converted into the shopping center Hofstatt (customer site), which opened in 2013 and features a wide variety of trendy stores on 18,000 square meters.
  • Southeast of Hackenstrasse, outdoor stores, restaurants and brand stores characterize the look of Sendlinger Strasse.

In former times, Sendlinger Strasse led towards the village of Sendling far behind the old city gate Sendlinger Tor. Nowadays, the city gate marks the end of the historic old town of Munich. If you walk down Sendlinger Strasse, you will pass by a number of important sights:

The Asamkirche (No. 62) is one of Munich's most magnificent churches. Crammed between the houses, it is not noticed by many a shopper. Yet it is worth a look into the late Baroque church. The adjacent Asam-Haus of the master builder Egid Quirin Asam also shines with its Christian motifs in baroque splendor.

The Singspielhaus (No. 31) was erected in Sendlinger Strasse in 1898. Previously, an inn of the brewer Franz Singlspieler stood here. The plastered brick house is named after him. Above the jeweller's shop Fridrich (No. 15), you will find one of Munich's morris dancers, who performs his little dance here every hour. Behind the late Baroque style richly decorated Ruffinihaus (Rindermarkt 10), the Rindermarkt invites city strollers to a little rest.

Further streets around Sendlinger Strasse

Behind the Sendlinger Tor gate, Munich's most popular nightlife area begins: Sonnenstrasse stretches north and south in a curved form, thus giving the area the nickname "Feierbanane" (party banana). Many clubs attract loads of party people every night.

Müllerstrasse leads south from Sendlinger Tor into the trendy Glockenbachviertel district. Trendy shops and many cafes wait here during daytime. To the north, Sendlinger Strasse continues via Rindermarkt to Marienplatz, from where it is possible to reach the noble shopping zone at Theatinerstrasse.

But Munich's main shopping areas in the traditional pedestrian zone along Kaufingerstrasse and Neuhauser Strasse are also easily reachable from here. East of Marienplatz, you can indulge in culinary delights at the Viktualienmarkt or in the Tal street.
