A landmark with great history: Facts about St. Peter

St. Peter's is not only one of Munich's best-known churches, but also one of the state capital's top sights. And there are good reasons for that:

  • View: The viewing platform in St. Peter's, at a height of 56 meters, offers a great view in all directions - including, of course, Marienplatz with City Hall (Rathaus) and the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) behind it
  • City history: The church of St. Peter is the oldest parish church in Munich with the oldest bells, and historically the first tower clocks in the city. The weathered grave slabs on the outer walls of the church take visitors on a journey back in time.
  • Art treasures: The nearly 300-year-old Baroque high altar with a golden figure of St. Peter is one of Munich's best-known ecclesiastical art treasures.

If you're free of giddiness and fit for climbing stairs, then you're bound to enjoy one of the most beautiful views over Munich from the tower of Alter Peter.

  • 300 steps: That's about how much visitors have to climb to reach the viewing platform at 56 meters.
  • What is there to see? From the Alter Peter you not only have an excellent view of the Frauenkirche towers and the old town, but you might even see the Alps if the weather is good - which, with the Munich skyline, makes a perfect picture-postcard panorama.

Inside the parish church of St. Peter, there are numerous art treasures to explore. Among them are a high altar from the early 18th century with a golden figure of St. Peter - and the relics of St. Munditia in a glass coffin for all to see. The remains of the catacomb saint, who lived in Rome around 250, arrived Munich as a gift in the 17th century.

St. Peter's Church is closely connected with the history of the city of Munich. The roots of the church on the little "Petersbergl" hill in the old town traces back to the 12th century. Its tower clocks are the oldest documented city clocks in Munich and have 8 dials. The tower bells have also been an integral part of the city for centuries. Four of the current eight bells were cast between the years 1327 and 1720. The smallest and oldest bell are no longer rung - the "Poor Sinner's Bell" (Arme-Sünder-Glocke) used to sound during executions on Marienplatz and now hangs behind a barred window in the tower basement.
