Eisbach wave remains closed

Although the work to clean up the Eisbach stream is complete, surfing on the wave in the English Garden is currently not possible. It is not yet known when the Eisbach wave will be accessible to surfers again.

The surfing rules for the Eisbach wave

  • Surfing is permitted from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. This complies with both the requirements of the State Penal Code (LStVG) and the recommendations of the Munich Fire Department, which consider rescuing people in the dark to be significantly dangerous and therefore less likely to succeed.
  • Surfing is only permitted with a self-releasing leash. This is intended to ensure that surfers can detach themselves from their boards in the event of danger and avoid being submerged.
  • The wave may only be used by experienced and physically fit surfers. Surfing is generally only permitted with an escort.
  • The escort monitors from the shore to ensure that nothing happens and alerts emergency services in an emergency (the buddy principle).

The Eisbach wave: What awaits you here

  • The Eisbach river is considered a popular hotspot for surfers, spectators and photographers.
  • It is located on the southern edge of the English Garden near the Haus der Kunst museum.
  • The Eisbach's surf spot is considered the world's most constant, biggest and best river wave in the middle of a big city and has been surfable for 40 years.
  • The Eisbach wave has also been used for television and cinema:
  • Swimming and bathing at the surfer wave is not allowed.

The German TV show detectives Ivo Batic (Miroslav Nemec, r.) and Franz Leitmayr (Udo Wachtveitl) have also investigated at the Eisbach.

Only absolute professionals should venture into the water here, because surfing is neither easy nor safe and therefore not suitable for beginners. Swimming and bathing is not allowed here. But don't worry, the spot is also ideal for hanging out in the English Garden.

How do you get there? The Eisbachwelle is hard to miss: from the National Museum bus stop, you can see the spectators on Prinzregentenstrasse on the parapet of the small bridge right by the Haus der Kunst. Or you just follow one of the people who carry their surfboard through the English Garden.

After a detour to the Haus der Kunst museum or the associated Golden Bar, you can watch the Eisbach surfers surfing on your way home on a warm summer evening, but also in the depths of winter.
