Pilgrimage Church of Wies - all about the UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Wieskirche at a glance

• Location: "Die Wies" is located about 100 km south-west of Munich in the Upper Bavarian Pfaffenwinkel in Steingaden (Weilheim-Schongau district).
• Known for: Rococo pilgrimage church, image of grace ("Flagellated Savior"), UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
• History: Built from 1745-1754 by Dominikus Zimmermann (architect) and his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann (frescoes).

A masterpiece of the Rococo

In the middle of the 18th century (1745-54) the pilgrimage church was built by Johann Baptist and Dominikus Zimmermann - by order of the monks of the monastery of Steingaden. The occasion was the miracle of tears of a wooden figure of Christ, the "Flagellated Savior". The image of grace can be admired in the church. 

Since 1983, the chruch has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its magnificent rococo-style decoration with the extensive ceiling fresco and the richly decorated chancel with pulpit.
