Typical square design of the 19th century

At this square, the buildings hardly look alike: this kind of square design is typical for the 19th century. Only the Künstlerhaus, which is located there, at least bears a relation to the square's namesake. Here, artist prince Franz von Lenbach occasionally held artists' parties, masked balls and banquets.

A streetcar line and several major streets branching off from Lenbachplatz make the square a transportation hub in Munich. Around the square are a number of famous and old buildings, such as the Munich Palace of Justice and the Neue Maxburg. On the eastern edge of Lenbachplatz is the Wittelsbach Fountain, which was built in the classical style at the end of the 19th century.

Memorial Stone for destroyed Synagogue

With the name, the city honors the painter Franz von Lenbach, who became famous for his portraits of personalities from business, art and society in the 19th century.

In the past, there was a Capuchin monastery on this square, which was dissolved at the beginning of the 19th century. In addition, the Old Main Synagogue stood here, which was demolished by the Nazis in 1938. Today a memorial stone reminds of it.
