The site of the museum originally served as an airfield for the Royal Bavarian Aviation Troops.

In 1919, an airfield for the Royal Bavarian Air Force was built right next to the Schleißheim castles. In the early 1990s, it was decided to build an exhibition hall at this historic site.

Flugwerft Schleißheim was opened in 1992 as the first branch of the Deutsches Museum and has developed into one of the largest and most important aviation museums in Germany.
