The Munich Glyptothek at a glance
In the Glyptothek you can marvel at works of art from four eras. These include both originals and Roman copies of Greek masterpieces from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods. Among the heads and figures of famous ancient personalities, visitors can study facial features that appear alive and admire the work of sculptors long dead. These are complemented by the bronze figures, vase art and gold jewelry in the State Collection of Antiquities.
Classicist architecture in the style of an ancient temple
The building was built in the style of an ancient temple by architect Leo von Klenze. The museum opened in 1830, making it the oldest public museum in Munich. The art collection and the construction of the museum traces back to King Ludwig I. The classicist exterior contributes to the imposing appearance of Königsplatz. The entrance is adorned by twelve Ionic columns. Above it stands Athena, protector of the plastic arts, surrounded by other sculptures. The figures in the niches, including Prometheus or Hephaisto, represent the arts and their stories that await visitors inside.
The steps leading to and around the building are used by Munich residents on sunny days for a moment of rest.
