The focus at Museum Brandhorst is on the works of the American artist Cy Twombly. His works shaped abstract expressionism. They include paintings, drawings, photographs and objects - large or small. For example, the 12 paintings from Twombly's series "Lepanto" can be seen in the museum.

The room in which they are exhibited was furnished according to the wishes of the artist himself. The Brandhorst Museum is very proud of this extensive Cy Twombly collection, which is considered unique and most significant outside the USA.

History: From art collection to museum

Museum Brandhorst zur Lange Nacht der Museen
Mde / Immanuel Rahman

The Museum Brandhorst project is based on the passion for collecting of the husband and wife of the same name. The institution itself is run by the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen. The opening of the museum took place in May 2009. The 46 million euro building was realized by the Berlin-based architectural firm Sauerbruch Hutton in close cooperation with the State of Bavaria and Udo Brandhorst himself.

The exterior façade of the approximately 15-meter-high building is adorned with 36,000 ceramic rods in 23 colors. Depending on the perspective of the viewer, the surface of the building seems to change in materiality and structure. This special design also allows maximum daylight to enter the building's interior.
