The Ostpark at a glance

The Ostpark is more than just an insider tip. It's not just the residents of the Perlach and Ramersdorf districts who enjoy visiting the 56-hectare park. Many appreciate the fact that it is quieter here than in other Munich parks. Yet the Ostpark also has some highlights to offer:

  • Water: The 3.5-acre lake with an island is popular with ice skaters in winter
  • Refreshments: The Michaeligarten directly on the lakeshore is one of Munich's most popular beer gardens
  • Sports: In winter, the Ostpark is a popular place for tobogganing. Otherwise, you can also play table tennis or volleyball here and, of course, jog.
  • Leisure activities: The East Ice and Fun Sports Center is embedded directly in the Ostpark. There is also a skate park here, and the Michaelibad is directly adjacent to the park.
  • Children: In the very east of the park you can find the large adventure playground Maulwurfhausen.
  • How to get there: By public transport use the U-Bahn U5 from Hauptbahnhof to Michaelibad and then to Feichtstrasse 19, 81735 Munich.

Where barbecue is allowed in the Ostpark

In the northwestern part at the lake in the Ostpark there is a barbecue zone, which is much frequented on summer days. Families, young people and groups from the surrounding area meet here.

The summer smell of roasting wafts over the meadow. Nearby are the skate park and the Michaelibad, so there is plenty of recreational entertainment.

The history of the Ostpark

During the planning for the Neuperlach district in the 1960s, the idea of establishing a local recreation area in the form of a park came up.

In 1962, the decision was made to build the first section of the park, covering almost 16 hectares.

Construction work began in 1973, and the facility was opened to the public two years later. In the same year, the construction of the second section was approved.

The entire East Park was ceremonially opened in May 1982.

Winter sports in the Ostpark: ice skating, sledding, cross-country skiing

In winter, Ostpark offers plenty of recreational activities, from sledding to ice skating.

  • From the Michaelibad subway station, it's a 10-minute walk to the sunniest sledding hill in Munich. In the middle, the slope drops off a bit steeper and shorter, while it tapers off rather flat at the edge.
  • Ice skaters can enjoy figure skating in the integrated ice stadium or do their laps in the open air at the Eis- und Funsportzentrum Ost (East Ice and Fun Sports Center).
  • Cross-country skiing fans are just as enthusiastic about the Ostpark, as one of the city's officially prepared cross-country ski trails is located here. The best place to start is near the Eis- und Funsportzentrum Ost or at the western end of the park, near Quiddestraße. The almost three-kilometer route runs along the Ostpark lake and into the western part of the park.
