Here you will find traditional rides and four festival tents that are reminiscent of the festival's origins. The separate area is located on the Theresienwiese and requires a small entrance fee of 4 euros, although many attractions are cheaper than in the rest of the festival area. Families and fans of Bavarian tradition appreciate the peaceful, authentic atmosphere and the Bavarian music and folk dancing on offer. The museum tent offers insights into the history of the Oktoberfest. New this year is the Boandlkramerei musicians' tent. More about the Oidn Wiesn

Further questions and answers

  • No. It is not compulsory to wear traditional costume, but many visitors choose to do so. Traditional clothing such as dirndls and lederhosen are popular. Original Bavarian costume is particularly popular at the Oidn Oktoberfest, but is also not compulsory.

  • Pets are not allowed at the Oktoberfest, with the exception of guide dogs for the blind.

  • On October 17, 1810, the first Oktoberfest took place with a large horse race on the occasion of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The celebration was held on a meadow on the outskirts of the city at the time, which was later named “Theresienwiese” in honor of the bride. However, this name was too long for the people of Munich, and so the shorter term “d'Oktoberfest” was created, which is a Bavarian abbreviation for “die Wiese” - hence the correct name “auf der Oktoberfest”, not “auf den Oktoberfest”.

  • To take advantage of the often mild and sunny weather of Indian summer, the Oktoberfest was moved to September in 1872. Since then, it has traditionally started on the first Saturday after September 15th and ends on the first Sunday in October.
  • October 3, the Day of German Unity, always falls during the Oktoberfest period. If it falls on a Monday, the Oktoberfest is extended by one day and thus lasts 17 days instead of 16. If it falls on a Tuesday, the city council can decide to extend the Oktoberfest until that day, resulting in a total duration of 18 days.
